Anyone looking at the league table before this game took place could have been excused for thinking that the result was almost a foregone conclusion and that CQP would emerge the winners possibly with a bonus point to the victors.
A closer look at Perth's results however would have shown that they had only played six home games as against ten aways and that it was the result of their poor performance on the road that had determined their lowly league position whereas at home while they had only won two games they had played all three top teams and lost three games by less than seven points. Taking this into account and CQP's rather poor record at the North Inch showed that some caution was advisable.
The match took place in dry conditions but on a very heavy wet pitch. With only four minutes played despite a bright opening by CQP Perthshire took the lead following a penalty for offside.
Five minutes later saw CQP on the attack resulting in a penalty to the visitors. This was followed quickly by another penalty resulting in CQP forcing their way over the Perthshire line but the ball was adjudged to have been held up.
The next CQP attack saw Tony Nyangweso going over in the left corner but the ref adjudged that he had put a foot in touch. With eighteen minutes played CQP took the lead when their forwards mauled the ball over the line and the referee awarded a try credited to catain Graham Williamson. The conversion was missed
With just over a quarter of the game played Andy Scott attempted a mark wich was not given and susequently with numerous CQP players offside a penalty was conceded in front of the posts. The kick was successful to give Pertshire a 6-5 lead.
Shortly afterwards CQP seemed to have scored on the right after good play by Wayne Burrows and David Goudie but Andy Noble's touchdown was disallowed on the grounds that after he crossed the Perthshire line he put a foot over the side in goal area resulting in a twentytwo drop out to Perthshire.
With just over thirty minutes played Perthshire made a good break through the centre as a consequence of some poor CQP defence. The ball was knocked on by Perthshire within a metre of the CQP line and CQP were able to clear upfield from the resultant scrum.
With only two minutes left on the clock till the half-time break CQP conceded a penalty for offside. The kick was taken from about thirty metres out but missed. Just before half-time Goudie took a shoulder knock which required attention and had to leave the field to be replaced by Tom Hine. Later reports indicated that it might not have been too serious.
Half-time score Perthshire 6 Cartha QP 5.
With six minutes played CQP retook the lead from a successful penalty by Andi Black.
After sixteen minutes Donnelly came on for Nellany.
With threequarters of the game played CQP increased their lead when CQP pressure close to the Perthshire line saw Ross Gillies go over for an unconverted try to give CQP a 13-6 lead.
The CQP pack which was clearly the more cohesive eight were now dominating play but stuffy Perthshire defence was preventing CQP from increasing their lead still further until just before the final whistle when a further penalty was awarded to CQP which Andi Black converted to increase the score to 16-6 which is where it stood when a few minutes later the referee blew for no side.
CQP deserved their victory but this was a srappy game which would have provided little entertainment to the neutral but from the point when CQP took the lead early in the second half the outcome never really looked in doubt.
The next opposition up is Dumfries at Dumbreck and the number of CQP errors will have to be substantially reduced if CQP's aspiration to overtake them in the league table is to be fulfilled.
Generally the CQP pack played well with Williamson and Gillies leading from the front. In the backs Rob May put in some attractive attacks. There was some general rustiness on display.
