At Dunfermline we had grabbed an early lead but had been overtaken by a Dunfermline fight back. Through there Dunfermline had played the game through their forwards and that was how they were expected to play at Dumbreck. In the evnt they played an entirely differnt game with a much changed team running the ball at every opportunity
Although the rain had gone there was still a damp raw feel to the air and handling errors were to be expected.
The match started dramatically with Dunfermline conceding a penalty for failure to release after CQP kicked off. Andy Scott immediately directed the ball into touch some five metres or so from the Dunfie line and CQP took and drove straight over the Dunfermline line for Ross Gillies to be given the touchdown. The attempted conversion was hooked well to the left.
With only eight minutes in CQP repeated the feat after yet another penalty conceded by Dunfie who were definitely on the wriong side of the ref's whistle. Again the conversion was missed leaving CQP with a 10-0 lead. Initially it was thought that the scorer was Graham Williamson but apparently it was Ross Gillies
Shortly afterwards Andy Scott had another opportunity to put the ball into touch from a penalty but this time he went for too much ground and the kick went into the in goal area and Dunfie were let off the hook.
It was almost half an hour in before Dunfie got any real chance of opening their account when they were awarded a kickable penalty but the attempt went to the left of the posts and the chance was lost but the score was only slightly delayed as soon afterwards Dunfie had another penalty chance which they took to reduce the deficit to 10-3
Soon after this CQP added their third try when following a forward drive Andy Scott made a fine break to the left and found Rob May in space and a good feed out saw May score his first try for CQP 1sts. This time Wayne Burrows was successful with the conversion and the score moved to 17-3. With thirty-five minutes played a forward maul down the right hand side saw CQP power over the Dunfie line for their fourth try thus securing yet another bonus point. Unfortunately the conversion was missed.
There was no further scoring before the half-time whistle went leaving the score at 22-3.Thoughout the first half Dunfie had consistently tried to break through the CQP line with ball in hand but had been held at bay by a combination of resolute CQP defence and some handling errors. Just before halftime May who had suffered a knock was replaced by Noble.
With only one minute of the second half played Robert Harvey made a forward drive but suffered some leg damage and went off to be replaced by Barrowman
With ten minutes played Dunfie seemed to have finally broken free from the CQP defensive stranglehold bur a determined Ross Gillies brought the move to an end.
Shortly after this CQP scored try number five when Dunfie were awarded a scrum less than ten metres off their line. The ball squirted out the back off the Dunfie scrum and an alert John McCrossan quickly gathered it up and dived over, Again the conversion attempt was missed to move the score to 27-3.
With thirty three minutes on the clock Andy Scott was sin binned for failure to release the tackled player following a succession of penalties conceded by CQP.This was unfortunate from Andy's point of view as he revealed later that this was his first sinbinning.
Harvey then came on for Peter Nicol.
With the clock showing 47 minutes Dunfie finally got across the CQP line for an unconverted try which brought the game to a close with a 27-8 victory to CQP
CQP's performance was competent and chances when they became available were well taken. The five points gained leaves CQP competing with Ardrossan and Howe for third spot but Hamilton sitting in second place look to have to great a lead to be caught unless they collapse in the ruin in.
Dunfie for their part should take great heart from their performance they competed throughout the afternoon never giving up even when the match was clearly lost and their late try was no more than they deserved.
The referee apparently refereeing only his second premier league game was Duncan McClement and maintained good control of the game throughout.
