Girls rugby returns to Dumbreck

Despite heavy rain on the Thursday and Friday the pitch survived a morning pitch inspection and CQP took the field at almost full strength with Ross Gillies and Iain Chisholm back. Scott McInnes was a late call off with a back problem.

CQP kicked off and with only a minute played Alan Howie went over in the left corner after taking a pass from Tony Nyangweso, the conversion was missed to leave CQP with a five point lead. to give the homesters the bast possible start.

With six minutes on the clock Dalziel exposed some defensive weakness on the CQP side and scored in the extreme right hand corner, again the conversion was missed.

A few minutes later CQP were awarded two penalties in quick succession and although neither kick looked especially difficult neither chance was taken and the score remained at 5-5. With just over half an hour played a nice passing movement from the set piece saw Andy Noble going over on the right wing but again the conversion attempt was scorned The kicking hoodoo continued a few minutes later when Dalziel failed to convert what looked like a fairly straightforward chance to add three points. With a minute of injury time played Dalziel wasted a very good try scoring opportunity when the Dalziel player opted to kick through despite having a two man overlap on his left side. Immediately after that Dalziel did cross the home line close to the posts but the final pass was adjudged to have been forward and the score remained at 10-5 to CQP at the break.

Two minutes into the second half there was a historic moment at Dumbreck when Colin Reid who for years has sought to alert numerous referees to the error of their ways was distinctly heard to shout a congratulatory comment on to the park in the direction of the referee. Such was the impact of this that John Robertson nearly swallopwed his false teeth and George Buchanan nearly fainted There were suggestions that a book should be opened on whether this was a truly once in a lifetime moment.

Four minutes of play saw CQP awarded a scrum five metres from the Dalziel line and the home pack duly crossed the Dalziel line for a pushover try touched down by number 8 Peter Hollier. Again the try went unconverted this time by Wayne Burrows who had taken over kicking duties from Iain Chisholm.

This was followed by a try for Dalziel who took a good ball in the lineout and scored between the posts with the try being credited to McAulay. This time the conversion by Simpson was successful to put the score to 15-12.

CQP responded instantly and Ross Gillies made good ground before being tackled high leading to a CQP penalty followed quickly after by another penalty close to the Dalziel line. CQP opted for the scrum and with CQP going forward Dalziel deliberately infringed and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try. This time the conversion was successful to move the score to 22-12. and give CQP the try bonus. Dalziel replied with a successful penalty to narrow the score to 22-15

With threequarters of the game played Mc Kinnon was replaced by McFarland at hooker.

With twentynine minutes on the clock CQP got a real break when Chishom intercepted a Dalziel pass across the face of the CQP line and raced at least ninety metres upfield to score between the posts and move the score to 29-12. Just before the final whistle Dalziel scored their third try which went unconverted to leave the final score at 29-20 to CQP.

This was a satisfactory outcome from a CQP point of view. The set piece operated very well and later Peter Hollier was declared the coaches man of the match. Again however the lineout connection between thrower and jumper proved to be a problem. The final league game of the first half of the season will take place in two weeks time away to Haddington who were heavily defeated yesterday by Ardrossan
