Cartha 3rd XV @ Clydebank 10s

The 3rd XV travelled to Clydebank with high spirits for our first fixture of the season. Having drawn the hosts, Clydebanks ‘A’ team, in the opening fixture, we were ready to go, and after a scrappy opening exchange managed to take the lead on the stroke of half time. Mark Barrowman acted quickly, taking a quick tap penalty to set up a passing move down the right wing putting us up 7-0. Unfortunately, at the restart we soon lost a try, and were on the back foot for the rest of the match. With time running down and the score 7-5, Clydebank managed to pounce on a mistake at a line-out to score a match-winning try, finishing the game 12-7.

Our second game, against Renfrew, was much more structured and this allowed us to dictate the pace of the game. The forwards provided a good platform, allowing the backs to put together some fantastic passing moves, scoring one try in either half for a comfortable 14-0 victory. This result meant we finished second in the group and drew Cumnock in the Bowl Semi finals. Unfortunately a couple of injuries took their toll and we took the field with a much weakened squad, with various players out of position. After a terrible first half, where we lost four tries, we were able to rally together and began to control possession and put together multiple phases of play. However, we couldn’t make the final breakthrough, and Cumnock got one more score, the fixture ending 35-0.

Our performance in the second half bodes well for the season, considering we are due to play Cumnock’s 2nd XV in league fixtures this season, we were able to hold our own for extended periods of play against their first team players.

Helensburgh had great success in this year’s competition, winning both the Cup and the Bowl, while Garnock took home the Plate.
