MATCH REPORT Ardrossan 28.8.10

The match took place in dry conditions with a wind blowing almost end to end. CQP had the wind advantage in the first half.
Those of us who witnessed the equivalent fixture last year were aware that on that occasion we were blown away by Ardrossan. There were reasons to suspect that on this occasion things might be different but we knew that Ardrossan after a poor start last year had finished strongly and if they were to start the way they finished they would prove to be difficult opponents.
From a CQP perspective we had lost three of our first team pool backs from last year, namely Denny, Mocelutu and Loakman. In addition four of our first team backs were unavailable namely Nyangweso, Sherlock, Howie and Stewart. Our resources behind the scrum were therefore stretched but up front we looked strong having recruited Fraser McKinnon from East Kilbride and only missing Peter Hollier who will return from Camp America in mid September.
A read through the Ardrossan programme and in particular their coaches notes showed that they had put in some really hard training pre season including training on the Stevenston sand dunes and lifting logs and tractor tyre pulling on a nearby farm.
After only 5 minutes of play CQP opened the scoring as a result of a forward drive near the Ardrossan line with Ross Gillies being awarded the touchdown. The conversion was missed and with only three more minutes on the clock Ardrossan reduced the leeway from a penalty to leave the score at 5-3 to CQP.
With twelve minutes on the clock CQP added a second try this time as a result of some good play by Andrew Noble who side stepped his opponent and sent a grubber kick over the Ardrossan line which Callum Dickson grounded. Unfortunately the conversion was missed again.
Shortly after this CQP secured a scrum five metres from the Ardrossan line which was reset but unfortunately the CQP forward trying to breech the Ardrossan line was adjudged to have gone into his own player and the danger to Ardrossan was averted.
This was followed by another successful penalty to put the score to 10-6 to CQP. With thirty three minutes played CQP increased their lead by three points when Chisholm successfully converted a penalty but just before half time another opportunity to increase the CQP lead was lost when the penalty attempt went low and wide of the left hand post and half-time came with the score standing at 13-6 to CQP but with the wind to face in the second half. The first half had been punctuated by frequent stoppages as the referee blew for penalty after penalty for minor transgressions. The game therefore had lacked flow but had certainly not lacked effort from two fit teams. If anything the Ardrossan backs looked the sharper but the CQP pack looked well drilled and disciplined.
With only five minutes played Ardrossan broke down the right hand side at pace and after some good interpassing scored some twenty metres to the right of the posts. The try was duly converted to level the score at 13 a piece.
With twenty minutes played Ardrossan had a chance to go into the lead from another penalty but in this instance the kick was pushed to the right of the post top retain the status quo.
A mishandle in the centre of the field saw Ardrossan take the opportunity to force their way downfield to about five metres from the CQP line but Cookie managed to steal the ball in the maul and the danger was averted.
With twenty-four minutes played one of the Ardrossan second row players was yellow carded when he was adjudged to have committed two infringements within a space of a couple of minutes.
Throughout the second half Ardrossan whenever they had the chance used the wind to try to gain good field position but CQP inevitably fought their way back upfield. Although not dirty the game was very physical and it was no surprise the attendance of one or other of the physios was a common sight in the second half and it was clear that the tension was likely to last well over the designated forty minutes.
With seven minutes of injury time played Ardrossan were awarded a penalty on the half way line and to the left of the posts which meant that the wind was more or less at the kickers back and to the delight of the home support the ball duly sailed over the bar and the final whistle was a blown a minute later when Ardrossan put the ball into touch with Ardroosan winning 16-13.
There was very little between the teams and overall justice would have been better served had the score remained at 13-13 but somehow on the touchline you just knew that the game would probably end the way it did.
CQP have most certainly absolutely nothing of which to be ashamed.Ardrossan are a well trained strong running team and throughout their defence was solid. In recent pre season games it has been a familiar sight to see Cookie, Big G or Ross Gillies surging forward but against this team try as they might and they did try it simply wasnt possible to make the same amount of ground as usual.
Overall the packs display was first class with the Ardossan line out ball being disrupted and nothing being given away in the scrum.
Behind the scrum Andy Scott distributed the ball well from stand off. It might have been worthwhile to try to grubber kck to get behind what was a very strong Ardrossan defence or to deepen the line.Scott McInnes stood out as the player most likely to pierce the Ardroaan line.
CQP team:1 Harvey,2 cKinnon,3 LAMONT,4 Nellany 5 Williamson 6 Cook ( Capt ) 7Dickson 8 Gillies 9 McCrossan 10 Scott 11 Noble 12Chisholm 13 McInnes, 14Davidson and 15 Leslie.
Subs used Nicol and Smyllie, not used Hamilton.
On the day the Ardrossan dead ball kicking was more successful that that of CQP and in the end that was the difference between the teams.
