Girls rugby returns to Dumbreck

The match took place in almost perfect conditions with constant sunshine and hardly any wind.

The CQP team comprised the same team as the previous week with the exception that Michael Sherlock came in at fullback for the unavailable Alan Howie who was involved in best man duties.

With only a few minutes played CQP took the lead after Craigs were penalised for a high tackle and Chis duly punished them with a successful kick. With only a few more minutes played CQP increased their lead to six points from another Chis penalty.

Whitecraigs eventually got on the board after 18 minutes when Moffat got over from close range and then converted to give Craigs a 7-6 lead

CQP responded in due course with a fine try started off by an excellent break by Tony Nyangweso who fed out to Chis who then passed out to Andy Noble who finished off the move by crossing the Craigs line and moving further in towards the posts. With the ball grounded Andy found himself late tackled by the Craigs outside centre the tallest of the Craigs backs.Andy had to be helped from the field. He was replaced for the remainder of the game by Michael Gallacher on the wing and with Craigs reduced to 14 players CQP duly increased their lead when Ian Cook crossed the line from close in and Chis again slotted the conversion to put CQP into a 20-7 lead.

Almost on the stroke of half time Tony was late tackled and required treatment throughout the interval before he could resume.

Halftime Whitecraigs 7 Cartha Queen's Park 20

Almost immediately after the resumption of play in the second half Craigs reduced the leeway when they took a quick throw in and the receiving Craigs player evaded various CQP tackles and found himself one on one with Michael Sherlock given that he probably outweighed Michael by about four stones and was going at full speed it was no surprise to see him break through the attempted tackle and score between the posts to give Moffat the easiest of conversions and move the score to 20-14.

Shortly after this Andy Scott tried the through ball to the corner for Michael Gallacher to chase but the kick was just too far in front and the opportunity was lost.

With ten more minutes played Craigs got the lead back with another converted try from their left wing.

CQP fought back and gained a scrum five metres from the Craigs line. From the attempted push over Craigs conceded a penalty and CQP elected to take another scrum and pushed Craigs over their line but the ball was adjudged to have been held up leading to another scrum and this time Ross Gillies opted to go round the side but was stopped short and penalised for failure to release and from the resultant penalty Craigs were able to relieve the pressure.

Folllowing this Andy Scott made a good break only to see the ball eventually bundled into touch.

CQP made a further break through the centre and established a clear overlap on the left but the ref from a position some twenty yards ahead of the ball adjudged Chis's pass to have been forward. This was a view which was not shared by the CQP support who were more or less in line with the pass.Had the pass been allowed there was a clear opportunity for CQP to have scored.

The CQP set piece was now giving the Craigs eight a torrid time in the tight but with the ref choosing to ignore continuous squint put ins on the Craigs ball the best CQP could obtain on the craigs ball was to get a scrum in their favour when the scrum was turned.

By this time Nicol Smillie had replaced Michael Nellany in the second row.

With two minutes of injury time played Craigs were awarded a penalty which they chose to kick rather than put into touch and the game finished with a Craigs victory by 24 to 20.
