There were a few changes in the CQP team from the previous week. Wayne Burrows was missing and was replaced by Andi Black at 10 with his place at 15 being taken by Michael Sherlock. With Andy Scott back in at centre Tony Nyangweso moved to the wing in place of Ross Gilmour and Adam Stewart replaced Andy Noble on the wing with the latter moving to the bench Robert Harvey who had been suffering from a virus moved to the bench where he was joined by Ian Cook making his first appearance in the squad in a league game this season.Austin Burke also resumed on the bench.
The game was played in dry conditions with a light wind.
With only a minute played an Andi Black downfield kick failed to find touch and Dalziel belted the ball back downfield leading to a lineout from which Dalziel secured the ball tapped it back and Craig Simmons found a space and dived over for the opening try which went unconverted.
Two minutes later CQP conceded a penalty in their own half which was duly slotted over the bar to give them an eight point lead.
With only three more minutes on the clock CQP conceded another penalty and were marched back another ten metres for mouthing which made the kick much easier to move Dalziel to an 11 point lead which they increased further in twelve minutes when they added a second try The Dalziel forwards took the ball from a scrum and mauled the ball over just to the left of the posts. The try was converted to give Dalziel an eighteen point lead
Following a CQP offside Dalziel were awarded yet another penalty which they slotted to increase their lead to twentyone points with only sixteen minutes played.
Five minutes later Dalziel added try number three when CQP lost their own ball in a scum in front of the Dalziel posts leaving Dalziel to break upfield and score a try which they converted.to give them a twentyeright point lead.
This try seemed to finally provoke the CQP side into action and with five more minutes on the clock Tam Davidson picked up behind the scrum kicked the ball through and over the Dalziel line where he managed to follow up and touch down. Andi Black converted.Three minutes later however Scott McInnes was sinbinned in front of the CQP posts and Dalziel duly converted the resultant penalty to move them into a 31-7 lead.
With thirtyeight minutes on the clock CQP scored their second try following a lineout take and drive with Ross Gillies getting the touchdown. The conversion fell short which left the score at 31-12 at half-time.
By this time both Harvey and Cook had taken the field.
From the restart Sherlock had a run through the middle but was stopped and the ball was dislodged in the tackle.
With only four minutes played CQP added a third try scored by Ian Cook which Andi Black converted Shortly after this CQP conceded another penalty this time for failing to bind in the scrum.Dalziel again chose to put the ball into touch in the hope that they would secure a fourth try but it did not happen.
With eleven minutes played the Dalziel number thirteen was sinbinned and while he was off the field CQP scored their fourth try this time by Andy Scott who had generally been showing considerable agression and purpose at centre.Again Andi Black converted and with the score at 31-26 the possibility of an amazing fightback was on the cards. Unfortunately from a CQP point of view they seemed unable to make progress without conceding more penalties which Dalziel continued to try and convert into a fourth try. As the game neared it's end CQP were penned in their own twentytwo and Dalziel were happy to concede penalties to ensure that CQP could not get up the park. Various unsuccessful attempts were made to break out until the ref with numerous minutes on the clock for injury time blew up to give Dalziel a 31-26 victory in a game of two halfs.
It would be easy to pass comment on the CQP start to this game and the numerous penalties which were conceded but perhaps it is best to leave it to the coaches and the players to reflect on this.In many ways this game was played out in a very similar manner to the game at Dalziel last season. One difference this time was that Dalziel had recruited some tall well built forwards which if anything gave them an edge on CQp certainly in the earlier part of the game.
Final Score CQP 26 Dalziel 31
Pointage CQP 2 Dalziel 4 )
