CQP team: 15 May 14 Davidson 13 Nyangweso 12 Hine 11 Noble 10 Burrows 9 Black 8 Hollier 7 Dickson 6 Gillies 5 Nellaney 4 Williamson 3 Lamont 2 Plitz 1 Harvey. Subs Howie, McKinnon Donnelly and Cook.
The game was played in dry but dreich conditions. Andy Scott had sustained hamstring damage in the warm up which resulted in Tony Nyangweso moving to centre from the wing and Tam Davidson coming on from the bench. Alan Howie was contacted at short notice and agreed to play.
CQP were quickly into their stride and made it clear in the first scrum that they intended having the upper hand up front.CQP were playing atractive rugby with some fine close passing play.
With the CQP forwards on top they mauled over the Haddington line but the ball was deemed to have been held up. This was quickly followed by more CQP pressure but on this occasion despite crossing the Haddington line the ref awarded a penalty to Haddington which enabled them to temporarily relieve the pressure.
CQP should have been in front by this stage but enthusiastic defence by Haddington was thwarting their efforts.
With fourteen minutes on the clock CQP finally got reward for their pressure through a converted penalty by Andi Black.but only four minutes later Haddington drew level with a penalty of their own.
Haddington having weathered the initial CQP onslaught were now more in the game.
This was followed by two good moves in a row by Callum Dickson. Shortly afterwards Peter Hollier took a knock but was able to continue,
Soon after this a fine bit of rugby by CQP saw Rob May stopped only a yard short of the line.
With half an hour played CQP conceded a penalty in front of the posts for failure to releases. The kick was successful to put Haddington 6-3 ahead. A scoreline which was completely at odds with the way the game had gone in the first thirty minutes.
With thirty-five minutes on the clock CQP pressure was rewarded with a penalty some twenty metres out which was popped into touch. Nellaney took the ball in the lineout and the CQP pack mauled the ball over Haddington's line with the score being credited to Graham Willioamson. Andi Black again was successful with the conversion attempt and the score moved to 10-6 in CQP's favour.
Haddington got themselves into the CQP half and were rewarded by gaining a penalty which was missed and shortly afterwards scorned another chance to reduce the deficit when they missed another penalty to leave the halftime score at 10-6 to CQP
With only three minutes of the second half played Haddington did reduce their deficit to one point when they successfully gained three points from a penalty.
Cook now took the field replacing Nellaney. This meant that Gillies moved into the second row with Cook taking his place at wing forward.
Twelve minutes of play saw Michael Plitz make a good bullocking run down the right hand side. Immediately after this CQP went further ahead when following CQP forward pressure Andi Black gained the touchdown for CQP's second try which he then converted,
This moved the score to 17-9 where it remained despite CQP's best efforts to increase their lead until near to the final whistle when the match took a bizarre twist.
Prior to this we had seen Tom Hines make a good break through the middle and with three quarters of the game played Chris Donnelly took over from Callum Dickson
With twenty-seven minutes of the second half played Wayne Burrows went off, Alan Howie came on at full back, Rob May moved onto the wing Tam Davidson moved to scrum half and Andi Black moved out to stand off.
With thirty-six minutes played CQP again mauled the ball over the Haddington line only for it to be adjudged as held up. From the resultant scrum CQP were awarded a penalty and the expectation on the touchline was that the ball would be potted or that the penalty would be put into touch with the opportunity for CQP to go for another take and drive try. In the event Andi Black took the penalty short moved to his left before throwing a pass in the direction of the winger only to see it intercepted by Haddington's Adams who sprinted the length of the park to score a try which was then converted by King leaving the score at 17-16 to CQP
CQP immediately made their way into the Haddington half and were awarded a penalty in injury time. This time the decision was taken to go for goal as the referee had indicated that this would be the last play. The penalty however fell short landing just under the Haddington posts but as play moved on CQP managed to get over the Haddington line with Graham Williamson credited with the score out to the right meaning that if converted Haddington would leave with no points. Andi Black held his composure very well as the Haddington backs rushed off their line as soon as he moved forward but he kept his head down stroked the ball between the post leaving the final score as 24-16 to CQP.
The general view post match was that this was a game which CQP should and could have had sown up in the first half but Haddington deserve credit for their stubborn and effective defence and for their refusal to give up despite being on the back foot for most of the game. In addition Haddington have some very pacy young backs who if they were playing behind a more dominant scrum would cause some real problems for opposition defences.
Peter Hollier who had been highly visible throughout the match was given the man of the match award.
