Pre season success continues
Highlights of the pre season
The pre season warm up continues as planned with Catha Queens Park undefeated against: Highland, GHK (twice) and now Glasgow Accies. Although these teams are from lower divisions they are all very much teams on the ascendency with a lot of young talent on display coupled with some experience. All the games were highly competitive with lots of players bidding for the starting jersey in the first league game 27th of August.
The campaign started with Coach Grant taking the teams up to Highland for a game and weekend in the capital of the highlands. The games went well with Cartha winning 45-33. And the socialising went well with older heads passing on advice to the new boys until of course the old boys had to retire and leave to young ones to it. Johnny Manning stood out on the field and his commitment could not be questioned as he got the train up after missing the bus!
The new boys of Dave Kercher and the Gilmore Twins stood out as well bringing some passion and aggression to the teams play. Big G has scored a couple so far popping up in unusual places to score at centre and wide out, long may that continue.
The games against the "Glasgow’s" Accies and High school went well but we seem to let the opposition score first before getting into gear. Scott McInnes and Andy Scott have looked really sharp from the off this season with both Scottys making some fantastic runs. It was also great to see Ian Cook and Ross Gilies putting it about with some aggressive and determined play.
For a first time in a long time there is a challenge in all areas of the field. From an influx of front row to having a challenge in the backs with Dave Goudie looking a class act at centre or Standoff. One of our hosts in Inverness, Steven decided that he liked our dancing so much he would come and play at Drumbreck! He is very welcome.
We also welcome a new crop of Polish players, who hopefully can be able to work in playing with their shift patterns.
The Second XV also had a run out on Saturday the 20th but a large amount of call offs especially amongst the backs meant that the game against East Kilbride was a little one sided. But now everyone as had game time and should be ready for the start of the season.
The firsts and second travel to Greenock on Saturday the 27th in what looks to be a couple of cracking games.
